Dear Greta Thunberg, dear friends and colleagues in the fight to save our climate and our environment,

In July this year, we invited you to a protest in front of Germany’s Grohnde nuclear power plant, which is to be closed by the end of this year along with three others. By the end of next year, another three of them will be closed.

According to a report prepared by Ökomoderne e.V., taking these plants out of operation instead of coal- and gas-fired power plants will result in additional emissions of 1 billion tons of CO₂.

The report may be read here: One Billion Tons: CO₂ Reductions and a Faster Coal Exit in Germany.

This is a very concrete issue related to limiting the severity of a climate, environmental and social disaster that we can prevent right now together. Your presence at the protests against the closure of German nuclear power plants is very important. Not only will it help to influence the German government to reverse this anti-climate decision, but it will also unite the international climate and environmental movement around tangible solutions.

As you may recall, last year we submitted a letter to the German government and citizens in which Polish scientists, intellectuals, climate and environmental activists appealed to our German neighbors for the Federal Republic of Germany to reconsider its decision to move away from nuclear energy. We stressed that in times of accelerating climate catastrophe, we cannot afford to abandon this clean energy source before transitioning away from coal and natural gas.

The letter can be read here.

Unfortunately, Germany does not want to reconsider its decision, despite increasing objections, both in Germany and abroad, to the decision which has been made under different climate and environmental circumstances. A nuclear phase out is also planned by Spain and Belgium, and several countries are attempting to exclude nuclear power from the EU taxonomy for sustainable activities, despite the scientific opinion expressed by the European Joint Research Centre, among others. Experience teaches us that low carbon and environmentally friendly electricity from nuclear power is replaced mostly by new, highly emitting gas power plants and by keeping existing coal plants operational, and only in a small part by climate-friendly renewables.

That is why we invite you, Greta, we invite all interested parties, we invite everybody on 13th of November 2021 at 14:00 at the Brandenburg Gate in the capital of Federal Republic of Germany to support us in protesting the closure of efficient sources of clean energy such as Germany’s nuclear power plants. It is very important for the global climate movement to be unified around rational activities which take into account scientific knowledge and the needs of human civilization. Only a joint action to protect and develop all low carbon energy sources, increase energy efficiency, protect and restore nature, change the model of agricultural production and animal husbandry and modify social systems may achieve the results we hope for. We are all on the same side.

Our invitation to protest has already been accepted by dr. James Hansen, an astrophysicist, climatologist and professor directing the Program on Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, previously director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), who presented his research on global warming before the U.S. Congress in 1988, which influenced a more widespread understanding of global warming around the world.
The protest at the Brandenburg Gate cannot do without you! Come with us!
